STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)

Marquette University High School's educational approach to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math - what has become known as STEM curriculum, has always been an integrated, college-prep approach that is inherently STEM.

Students are building a strong foundation in scientific and mathematical theory with the ability to think, write and speak in the disciplines. They also gain applied and practical experience through in-class laboratory work and the school's many STEM-focused co-curricular activities.

College Preparation
Marquette High teaches students what colleges and universities want them to know when they arrive. Whether a student already holds a strong interest in a specific career path such as engineering, medicine, robotics or computer science, or isn't quite sure what he wants to be when he grows up, he can graduate from Marquette High prepared to pursue any major he chooses at the college of his choice without being hampered by most prerequisites his freshman year.

Educating the Whole Person
Marquette High has a strong tradition of preparing its students for further studies in academics disciplines that rely on math and science as their foundation. More than 97 percent of Marquette High graduates complete four or more years/credits of course work in both math and science (three in each is required). Elective offerings in computer science provide added value.

Marquette High's core curriculum, with a strong emphasis on the humanities, is part of a STEM preparation. Science and engineering schools place much value on students' ability to communicate well in writing, think critically and analyze issues. Creative engagement in the fine arts—whether in music, visual arts, or graphic design—complements and benefits STEM preparation.

Course Schedule
Students with a strong interest in STEM studies and careers should take a minimum of 4.0 credits each (four full years) of both science and math. Taking the most challenging courses in these areas—accelerated and AP level courses—may better prepare students for university work in STEM fields. Students with a strong interest in STEM should plan their high school curriculum to include courses in their junior and/or senior years such as: Advanced Computer Science, AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science, AP Statistics and Accelerated Physics.
