The School
Marquette University High School (MUHS),
founded in 1857, is a four-year college preparatory school for boys conducted by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The curriculum is college preparatory only. MUHS is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Typically 97% of the graduates each year enter a four-year college or university. There are 240 students in the class of 2010 and a total school enrollment of 1055.

Marquette University High School is located in the historic Merrill Park Neighborhood. The school sponsors the Merrill Park Project, a joint effort between MUHS and the Merrill Park Neighborhood Association, which focuses on education, housing and recreation/outreach. MUHS students volunteer in the educational, community support and recreational programs for the neighborhood.

Admissions
The students are admitted selectively based on previous school records, admission test results, and teacher/principal recommendations. Representing all economic and ethnic backgrounds, the students come from 150 different schools in the greater Milwaukee metro area. The student body is approximately 84% Roman Catholic. The remaining 16% of students include those of other Christian faiths, Buddhist, Jewish, Unitarian, Hindu, and Muslim faiths. Nineteen percent (19%) of the population are students of color. Over $1.4 million in student financial assistance is awarded annually.

The Mission
Marquette University High School is a Catholic, Jesuit, urban, college preparatory school for young men. MUHS strives to form leaders who are Religious, Loving, Seeking intellectual excellence, Committed to justice and Open to growth. MUHS fulfills its mission by providing a respectful, challenging and caring environment for a diverse community of students, educating the whole person – spiritual, emotional, intellectual, artistic, moral and physical, deepening students’ awareness of dignity and needs of all people, and forming men for others who will act like Christ, who came “not to be served but to serve.” (Mark 10:45)

The Faculty
Marquette University High School has a professional teaching staff of 80, 69% of whom hold masters or higher degrees. There are five Jesuit faculty members. Fifty-eight percent of the teaching faculty has spent 10 or more years at MUHS. The faculty to student ratio is 1 to 13.

School Day Structure
The school day consists of eight periods, including one for lunch. Four years of English and Theology are required. Pre-calculus is the lowest level of senior math. Sophomores are allowed to take AP U.S. History instead of regular U.S. History. Other AP classes are available in the junior and senior years. MUHS does limit students to three AP courses in their senior year. Frosh Advising is a guidance department transition class for freshmen one period, one day a week. The Class of 2010 will graduate on May 30, 2010.

Graduation Requirements
All course offerings with full descriptions can be found under “Academics” at www.muhs.edu. In addition to the minimum academic requirement of 23 credits for graduation, all students must complete the Freshman Retreat, Sophomore Retreat and 169 Service Program volunteer hours.

Class Rank
Because MUHS has selective admissions and a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, a cumulative ranking system does not fairly and accurately represent a student’s relative achievement. Therefore, MUHS does not rank. All students are prepared for admission to college. There are no weighted classes, grades or GPAs.
     A = 93-100 / B = 85-92 / C = 77-84 / D = 70-76 / F= 0-69
The mean GPA for MUHS students is 3.04.

Standardized Testing Results:
2009 ACT Scores - # of students taking the test:                2009 SAT Scores - # of students taking the test:
  231 out of 242 / 95% of the class.                                       91 out of 242 / 38% of the class.
