This year, 17 Hilltopper athletes have been nominated for the prestigious 2024 Milwaukee High School Sports Awards, recognizing exceptional athletes in the area.
The state champion Marquette High football squad was also a finalist for boys’ team of the year. The Hilltoppers defeated previously unbeaten Franklin High School with a 27-10 win, concluding the season with a 12-2 record. The team's state title run featured victories over the last two defending state champions.
Marquette University High School nominees for the 2023-2024 season included the following students.
Michael Broeker, Jr., Senior, Golf
Broeker was the Player of The Year in the Greater Metro Conference for 2024, and finished 23rd at the WIAA State Tournament in which the team finished 3rd. He finished with a 76 scoring average for the season. In his junior year, he led the golf team to a conference championship while taking home the individual title by five strokes, which earned him the WisSports.net Athlete of the Week honor for Wisconsin. Next year, he will compete in golf for Siena College.
Aidan Ferber, Senior, Tennis
Ferber (27-7) joined Ryan Gould as a 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All-State honoree after their doubles state title run. The pair were also named Greater Metro Conference Doubles Team of the Year. Aidan received the Mike Hutz Team Spirit Award for his support of teammates. He finished an 88-19 career record (82.2% winning percentage) in four years of varsity tennis.
Jack Fitterer, Senior, Volleyball
Fitterer was a standout three-year varsity starter who established himself as one of the top players in the state. A two-time 1st Team All-Conference and All-State selection, Fitterer led his team in assists in both 2023 and 2024. His exceptional play and consistency earned him a spot on the prestigious USA TODAY Volleyball Player of the Year watchlist.
Ryan Gould, Senior, Tennis
Gould (29-5) was a 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All-State selection who, alongside Aidan Ferber, captured Marquette's 10th Doubles State Title. A Greater Metro Scholar-Athlete and Wisconsin High School Coaches Association Academic All-State honoree, Ryan fought through adversity midseason before the duo's resilience shone through at State. Ryan's 88-11 career mark (88.9%) and leadership over four years earned him the Corey Hopp Senior Award.
Jack Hardt, Senior, Football
Hardt served as a two-year football captain and earned numerous accolades, including 1st Team All-State and Greater Metro Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year. A two-time 1st Team All-GMC selection, Hardt led the charge for an offense that racked up an impressive 2,200+ rushing yards. Renowned for his leadership and tireless work ethic, Hardt is also a multi-sport athlete who excels in baseball.
Thomas Haverty, Junior, Golf
Haverty finished 2nd Team All-Conference in the Greater Metro Conference, and led the team tied for 6th at the WIAA State Tournament. He contributed to the team winning conference, sectional and regional championships, as well as a 3rd place finish at state in 2024. Haverty has posted low rounds of 69 to win a Junior Tour event in 2023 and 72 at Whistling Straits. With a scoring average of 76 the last two seasons, he has proven to be one of the top prep golfers in the state.
Felix Huwiler, Senior, Soccer
Huwiler served as team captain with a prolific senior season, scoring 17 goals and recording 7 assists to lead the Hilltoppers. He was named 1st Team All-State selection, a member of the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region Team, and a 1st Team All-Conference honoree. Huwiler's achievements on the pitch have paid off, as he has earned a scholarship to play soccer at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee beginning next fall.
Thomas Menefee, Senior, Cross Country
Menefee, co-captain of the cross country team, was the 2023 Greater Metro Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Year after winning the conference meet with a 5K time of 16:18. As the team’s No. 1 runner, he led the squad to championships at the conference and sectional meets, and a 4th place showing at state. He also won individual titles at the Arrowhead Invitational and Viking Invitational, and secured top 5 finishes at the PT Night Meet, Hale, Marquette, and Sectional. Throughout his four years, he demonstrated significant improvement, with season bests progressing from 20:32 as a freshman to 15:51 as a senior.
Nolan Minessale, Senior, Basketball
Minessale twice earned the GMC Player of the Year title while being named 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All-State in his last two years. Additionally, Minessale was recognized as a two-time GMC Scholar Athlete and two-time Academic All-State, demonstrating excellence on and off the court. He holds the distinction of being the MUHS all-time leading scorer and capped off his career with a Division 1 State Championship title.
Murphy Monreal, Senior, Football
Monreal was a standout football player, earning two-time Honorable Mention All-State and two-time 1st Team All-Greater Metro Conference honors. Recognized as the top defensive back in the GMC, Monreal played a crucial role in a defense that achieved an impressive eight shutouts, with seven of those games ending in 35-point plus margin running clocks. As captain of the secondary, he made key coverage calls and adjustments, showcasing his leadership skills. Additionally, Monreal was an electric kickoff and punt returner, and will participate in the prestigious WFCA All-Star game in July. He will continue his football career at Northern Michigan University, and also excels in hockey as a multi-sport athlete.
Mitchell Nigro, Junior, Football
Nigro served as captain as a junior and earned prestigious accolades including 1st Team All-State and two-time 1st Team All-Greater Metro Conference. He played a crucial role in a defense that achieved an impressive eight shutouts, with seven of those games ending in 35-point plus margin running clocks. A versatile linebacker, Mitchell excelled at all positions, showcasing his tremendous pass-rushing and run-defending skills. His disruptive playing style demanded attention from opposing offenses, and his impressive strength made him a formidable opponent.
Gianni Quintero, Sophomore, Track and Field
Quintero achieved remarkable success at the state track and field meet, winning three state titles in the wheelchair 100, 400 and 800 meters. Quintero set a new state record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.02, shattering the previous record of 1:59.06. In the 100 meters, he finished with a time of 19 seconds, and in the 400 meters, he completed the race in 58.45 seconds, narrowly missing the state record by less than a second. After winning two state titles last spring, Quintero showed that he is a rising star in the sport. He was featured on ABC World News Tonight and competed at the World Abilitysport Games in Thailand.
Thomas Schmidt, Senior, Lacrosse
Schmidt earned Greater Metro Conference Player of the Year and secured a spot on the 1st Team as righty attackman. He ranked 3rd in the conference for goals (14), tied for 1st in assists (10), and 2nd in points (24). Leading all attackmen, Schmidt also tied for 5th in ground balls (20) and 4th in caused turnovers (12). His notable performances include a game against Brookfield, where he scored 6 goals, provided 2 assists, and recorded 3 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers.
Michael Stuckslager, Senior, Tennis
Stuckslager (37-2) earned 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-State honors with a 3rd place Doubles finish at State. He was also a Greater Metro Conference Scholar-Athlete and an Wisconsin High School Coaches Association Academic All-State recipient. Stuckslager took home the team's Most Improved Player Award as he elevated his game to new heights. His determination and willingness to do whatever the team needed were appreciated throughout his successful 81-5 career at a 94.2% winning clip.
Pat Teuteberg, Senior, Tennis
Teuteberg (34-4) was named 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All-State after his 3rd place Doubles finish at State. He received the Most Improved Player Award for his remarkable improvement that rivaled any in Coach David Frank's 20 years of experience. Teuteberg displayed impressive discipline, follow through and versatility, going 6-2 in Singles play. As a team captain, he led Marquette to a 54-8 record and an 87.1% winning percentage over his career.
Miles Von Rueden, Senior, Volleyball
Von Rueden was named to the 1st Team All-State and First Team All-Conference teams. In the state quarterfinal match, Von Rueden set a new Wisconsin state record by serving 8 aces in a single match to lead Marquette to victory. His 8 aces broke the previous state record for aces in a match at any level of high school volleyball in Wisconsin.
Connor Wyatt, Junior, Soccer
As a junior goalkeeper, Wyatt recorded 10 shutouts this season and an impressive 0.99 goals against average. He earned 2nd Team All-State and 2nd Team All-Conference honors. Wyatt also racked up a number of other prestigious accolades, including 1st Team All-County, 1st Team All-Region, 1st Team All-Area, and 1st Team All-Conference selections. His performances helped the team to regional and sectional championships before a 3rd place showing at state.
These outstanding student-athletes have demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication, and sportsmanship throughout their seasons. We are thrilled to see their hard work recognized and celebrated at the Milwaukee High School Sports Awards.
