Longtime MUHS distance and cross country coach Dan Baker has been named the next head coach of the Hilltopper Track & Field program.

Baker brings more than 15 years of coaching experience at MUHS, along with a deep commitment to the school, its student-athletes and the sport of running. He joined the Hilltopper coaching staff in 2011 and has served as Head Distance Coach for Track & Field since 2015, in addition to his role as an assistant coach with the MUHS Cross Country program.

Baker takes over a highly successful program from Nicole Williams, who spent more than a decade with MUHS Track & Field, including serving as head coach since the 2020 season. The Hilltoppers earned a 5th place finish at the 2026 WIAA Division 1 State Track & Field Championships.

In every season Baker has led the distance program, at least one individual athlete or relay has qualified for the WIAA State Meet. His athletes have earned 25 conference championships and 25 state meet qualifications. Among the program highlights are Brendan Reardon’s school record and 2nd place state finish in the 3200 meters, as well as school-record performances by the 4x800-meter relay, which placed 6th at state in 2025 and 5th in 2026.

Baker has also helped the Hilltopper Cross Country program achieve significant team success, including runner-up finishes at the 2020 and 2024 State Cross Country Championships.

A lifelong runner himself, Baker brings considerable competitive experience to the role. His connection to the sport stretches to his own high school career, when he developed into one of Wisconsin’s top distance runners, set multiple school records, and earned second-team all-state recognition.

As he takes leadership of the Track & Field program, Baker will build upon the relationships and traditions he has helped develop during his many years at MUHS while continuing to create an environment where young men can pursue excellence, enjoy competition and grow as teammates and individuals.
