Jake Moreland

Jake Moreland '95 has been named to the 2025 Western Michigan University Athletics Hall of Fame

Moreland, the current tight ends coach for the Houston Texans, was previously elected to the MUHS Hall of Fame in 2018. He also discussed his MUHS experience on the Raf & the Meatballs podcast

Moreland, a star tight end, lead the Hilltoppers to an undefeated season and the 1994 state championship title, a 31-0 win over Catholic Memorial. By the time he graduated, he’d earned full-ride football scholarships to multiple colleges.

He chose to play for the Western Michigan Broncos, where he started four years as a tight end. After an NFL stint with the New York Jets, Moreland returned to his alma mater to coach, first from 2004 through 2012 and then again in 2017.

Moreland chose Western Michigan in part to be near his family. “It was close enough that I could get home if I needed to, but far enough away that I could become my own person,” he said in a 2018 alumni magazine article. The school offered the two degrees that were of interest to him, business and education. And, he added, “I knew I would have a chance to play football early. I just knew it was the place for me.”

He lettered four years at Western Michigan, catching 143 passes as a tight end—a school record—and 13 touchdowns, tying for second on the Western Michigan record charts. He earned All-MAC (Mid-American Conference) 1st-team honors in 1998 and All-MAC 2nd-team honors and WMU’s offensive MVP in 1999. After earning a bachelor’s degree in marketing, he signed a free agent deal to play with the New York Jets.

Paul Conradson ’95, an assistant MUHS football coach who visited Western Michigan’s spring football camps saw Moreland in action as a coach.

“He is an outstanding coach in many ways," he said. "First, he knows the game of football and the position he coaches inside and out. More important, you can tell he really cares deeply for his players as people. I think that likely stems from his roots at MUHS and our training to be men for others.”
