NIL Info
Name, Image and Likeness information
This page will provide information regarding the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association's recent decision to allow Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities for student-athletes. Marquette University High School student-athletes now have the opportunity to benefit from their athletic talents and personal brands while maintaining their eligibility.
This new opportunity comes with important questions: How do you navigate NIL while staying compliant? What does it mean to build a personal brand? How can you position yourself for future success?
This page will provide the knowledge and tools needed to approach NIL strategically and authentically. We encourage all student-athletes and their parents to educate themselves and navigate this new era of high school athletics together.
MUHS NIL Policy
The following policy is included in the 2025-2026 MUHS student handbook
Definitions & Scope
NIL activity refers to any situation in which a student-athlete’s name, photograph, likeness, signature, social media presence, or personal brand is used for commercial purposes in exchange for compensation or benefits. Examples include but are not limited to:
- Sponsored social media posts
- Paid autograph sessions
- Running camps or clinics
- Paid speaking appearances
- Endorsements of products or services
WIAA Rules and Regulations:
The WIAA, the governing body for Wisconsin high school athletics, allows for NIL activity for high school students with some parameters. When followed, these parameters will keep an athlete eligible for participation, but if violated will make an athlete ineligible for high school competition. A broad overview of permitted activities and prohibited activities can be found on the WIAA website. For specific reference see Rules of Eligibility, Article IV, Section 1, B.1 and 2.
Prohibited Activities
Under WIAA and MUHS policies, Hilltopper student-athletes may not:
- Use MUHS logos, uniforms, facilities, or branded materials for commercial purposes
- Accept payment for athletic performance or “pay-for-play”.
- Promote products or services related to alcohol, tobacco, vaping, recreational drugs, gambling, political campaigns, or any category deemed inappropriate by MUHS.
Marquette University High School will inform students of NIL rules and share NIL resources so as to educate students on compliance. Further, upon knowledge of a violation, MUHS will report that instance to the WIAA.
Hilltopper student-athletes are responsible for knowing the WIAA NIL rules and regulations, while MUHS will assist in providing meaningful guidance throughout the process. If questions arise regarding NIL, then students are expected to speak directly with the Athletic Director about those concerns.
In order to ensure that the terms of a potential NIL arrangement is sanctioned and will not present a risk to the student athlete’s eligibility, any student who intends to enter into a NIL deal or arrangement must inform MUHS Athletic Director of the anticipated deal or arrangement before such arrangement is finalized. This information can be shared to Athletic Director Bob Herman by completing this form.
