NOVEMBER 5, 2020 HILLTOPPER PARENT WEEKLY Dear Parents and Guardians,
We encourage your son to get involved in school activities when possible this year. Winter sports information is provided in this newsletter. Our co-curriculars, homerooms, and athletic programs are designed to provide opportunities for growth, challenge, and achievement for students outside the classroom. Thank you for your support of student life at MUHS.
MedBot Update Considerations The following symptoms could indicate a COVID-19 infection. Students displaying any of the following symptoms, and not attributed to a health condition, will NOT be allowed in school. Your student is considered symptomatic if they have one of the symptoms marked with a (*) or two of the other symptoms:
Not everyone with COVID-19 displays all of these symptoms. For many, symptoms are mild with no fever. It is important to know that you can still transmit the virus to others even if you have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. Additionally, if your son has a fever, diarrhea, OR vomiting ALONE, you should keep your child home for at least 24 hours or until symptoms have resolved.
Beginning next week the following question will be added to the daily MedBot screening:
In the last 14 days have you been at any gathering of 10 or more people where you did not wear your mask and did not socially distance while among the group?
At this time, an affirmative response will not result in your son from being prohibited from attending school. Getting a Flu Shot is Critical During COVID-19 Pandemic Getting a flu shot is always important but reducing illness and hospitalization from flu is critical this year. Both influenza and COVID-19 are respiratory illnesses, but until there is a vaccine against COVID-19, the way to help prevent these two viruses from circulating at the same time is to get your flu vaccine now. Flu can be dangerous, for both adults and children. The best treatment is prevention. We all need to do everything possible to make a difference this flu season, so let's keep people flu-free while we focus on ending COVID-19. For more information about flu vaccinations visit: Who Needs a Flu Vaccine and When. Social Emotional Wellness Webinar Recording Available The recording from the MUHS Counseling Department Oct. 20 webinar is available for viewing if you didn't have an opportunity to attend. The discussion focused on mental health, social-emotional wellness, and how best to support your sons during the pandemic. Presenters included: Elle Davison, LPC, therapist in the Child and Adolescent Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization programs in West Allis; Dr. Jill Czajkowski M.D., pediatrician and fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics; and Anne Demski, LCSW, CEAP, representative for the Aurora Student and Family Assistance Program. Webinar Link: Social Emotional Wellness Admissions Applications for Fall 2021 If you have a future Hilltopper or know of an 8th grader who is interested in attending Marquette High, please feel free to share the following information. Applications for fall 2021 admission are still being accepted but the Nov. 6 and 7 Entrance Exam dates are now closed. Students who apply may select either Nov. 14 or Dec. 4 to take the Entrance Exam, which will be conducted virtually this year. Registration for the entrance exam is part of the admissions application. Apply Now Project Brotherhood Volunteers are still needed for Project Brotherhood, an effort by Mothers Guild and Fathers Club to develop and offer safe opportunities for students to spend time together with their classmates. There are two ways in which parents can help. First, be a class representative on the Project Brotherhood planning committee - four volunteers (two dads, two moms) are needed for each grade level to help lead the project. Second, be a general volunteer and help during the execution stage of various events. Please consider signing up to help build on the spirit of brotherhood that the MUHS students cherish! If you have any questions or ideas please contact Cami Adel, Jennifer Tierney or Marty Merrick. Volunteer Here Volunteer Opportunities Even though the service requirement for sophomores and juniors is currently "on hold" for this semester, the need for volunteers is still present in our local community. Please consider helping the following organizations:
Volunteer Sign-up for Topper Auction Work is underway for this year's Topper Auction on Saturday, April 24 and volunteers are still needed. This is our school's biggest and only fundraiser. It provides important funds for the needs of the school and supports our scholarship programs. Getting involved is easy. Just click on the volunteer link to see the ways in which you can help. There are plenty of opportunities for everyone. You pick the slots that you feel fit your talents, your interests, and/or your schedules. If you have any questions, contact Director of Events Carolina Itsines Winter Sports Information Winter sports begin soon. All winter sports practice and compete during the Christmas break. Students should carefully review daily announcements for the most up-to-the-minute information about pre-tryout meetings.
Any student intending to try out for or participate on any team must have all forms completed and up-to-date BEFORE tryout day. Forms include: WIAA Athletic Permit signed and dated by physician, Emergency Information, MUHS Athletic Code, WIAA Eligibility, MUHS concussion form, and FERPA. New this year is the COVID-19 Waiver. Additional information and forms can be found on the MUHS website: Athletics Forms
Trap Team Information Zoom Meeting Nov. 16 There will be an informational meeting for all students (and their parents) interested in joining the MUHS Trap Team on Nov. 16 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The meeting will be conducted via Zoom. This informational meeting is for families whose students have not been on the team in the past. Any family interested in attending the meeting should contact and provide an email address to Assistant Coach William Stuart at willstu50@gmail.com. Fall Sport Team Photos Available Team and individual portraits for soccer, volleyball, cross country and football are available to view and order by using the link below. Navigate to the green Sports (Team & Individual) tile to view and order images. If you have any questions, contact VIP at support@vipis.com or call during business hours at (262) 375-4457. VIP Link: https://www.vipis.com/group/5365a522/marquette-university-high-school Virtual College Fairs to be held Nov. 8 Juniors and seniors should check out the Wisconsin Education Fair (WEF) and the National NACAC Virtual College Fair for great opportunities to gather information from hundreds of colleges. Both virtual college fairs will be held on Sunday, Nov. 8. Transcript Requests for College Applications We ask students to make every effort to place transcript requests with Ms. Sahagún - in person or via virtual meetings - at least two weeks before an application deadline. Now is the time for your son to see her for any Dec. 1 app deadlines on his list (a few popular Dec. 1 colleges: Marquette, SLU, Xavier, Loyola Chicago). A student does not need to have submitted his application(s) before meeting with Ms. Sahagún. Final Reminder - UW-Milwaukee Virtual Express Admission Day Nov. 19 UW-Milwaukee will be conducting Virtual Express Admission Appointments for MUHS seniors on Thursday, Nov. 19, offering 15-minute sessions to receive an On-Site Express Admission Decision. Detailed emails, with required steps to participate, were sent to all seniors from Mrs. Sullivan on Oct. 19 and Oct. 27. While not required for UWM admission consideration, this is a wonderful service UWM is offering to senior Hilltoppers. If your son has UWM on his list, encourage him to consider! After College Admission Application Submission - It's Portal Time Now that so many seniors have started (and will continue) to submit applications to colleges, please encourage your son to watch for emails to arrive from his applied-to-colleges (usually within 2-3 business days of his app submission) giving directions on how to create his Applicant Portal. This portal provides a checklist of required materials as they arrive at the Admissions Office. Please note, it can often take colleges 2-3 weeks to log in arriving credentials especially around a college's deadline as they manage the large number of new documents they receive daily.
Joe Hilltopper Says: A few tips from recent MUHS Grads on Applicant Portals:
