September 9, 2021 HILLTOPPER PARENT WEEKLY Dear Parents/Guardians,
MUHS is committed to forming students who demonstrate honesty, honor, and moral decision making in all aspects of their lives, including their academic work. During the year we will increase our focus on academic integrity and character development. It is no surprise that there has been a significant rise in cases of academic dishonesty in secondary and higher education throughout the country due in part to the pandemic and online learning. Here at MUHS students have noted that academic dishonesty is a problem area through our annual school climate survey. In spring 2021, 47% of MUHS students identified cheating and plagiarism as a severe or moderate problem at our school. They cited several causes for the problem of cheating including inadequate time to complete assignments and work, students' expectations of themselves to always achieve at high levels, parent expectations for students to earn certain grades, and the chances students will not be caught.
We have implemented several measures to teach students about the virtues of integrity and honesty in academics. This month teachers and academic administrators will discuss with students what academic integrity means, how one's values may be reflected in their work, and review the pillars of academic integrity and moral decision making. Linked here are MUHS policies in regards to academic integrity. We request your support of the school's efforts and policies to teach our sons the importance of integrity and upholding standards of academic honor.
As always, I am grateful for your partnership in forming men of competence, conscience, and compassion.
AMDG,
Jeff Monday Principal
Open House Yard Signs Available The 2021 MUHS Open House is Sunday, Oct. 24. To help promote the event, we have a supply of yard signs available that we would like our MUHS families to place in their front yards or near their businesses, if possible. These yard signs are now available for pick-up after school at the Henke Entrance. Thanks for your help in promoting our Open House this year. Emergency Test Alert System Update Thanks to everyone who has opted in to receive text alerts from School Messenger, our emergency notification system. Families who have NOT yet opted in will receive an automated text message at 6 p.m. this evening (Sept. 9) with instructions on how to complete the process. By opting in, you will receive text alerts if inclement weather forces the building to close. It will also ensure that you will receive critical text alerts in the event of a school emergency. All data will be kept confidential and will not be shared with any third parties. The system will ONLY be used for emergency alerts and urgent and unscheduled closings. First "Saturdays with Ignatius" Mass - Sept. 11 As part of the Ignatian Year -- the 500th anniversary of Ignatius being hit with a cannon ball which led to his conversion and the 400th anniversary of his canonization, Marquette High is sponsoring for its alumni and parents a brief sabbath rest titled Saturdays with Ignatius. It is an opportunity to become acquainted with and experience some of the riches of Ignatian Spirituality. Every second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m., a Mass will be held in the Three Holy Companions Chapel. During the Mass, Fr. Doug Leonhardt, S.J. will give a homily on an Ignatian topic with a short time for reflection. Join fellow MUHS parents and alumni to learn how Ignatian Spirituality helps us to find God in the busyness of our lives. First semester schedule:
A Note from the MUHS Security Desk Regarding After School Traffic You may have you noticed the construction on W. Clybourn when you are in the area of Marquette High. The city is digging up the street between 32nd & 35th Streets which does not allow us to open the Clybourn gate from the student parking lot. Currently each afternoon approximately 180 cars in the lot need to exit onto W. Michigan Ave. into the westbound traffic of parents and students on Michigan. Everyone has been patient but it takes almost 30 minutes to empty the student lot. We would encourage students coming out of the lot to turn right onto Michigan. They can then go north on 32nd St. to Wisconsin Ave. which is controlled by a traffic signal. They can go south on 32nd to St. Paul and then right again back to 35th St. Students may want to consider spending another 30 minutes in school to study and let some of the heavy traffic leave the parking lot. (The library is open until 4 p.m.) Thank you for your patience and understanding. Dual Credit Virtual Parent Information & Meeting - Sept. 13 MUHS partners with Saint Louis University to offer some courses for dual credit. Dual credit programs allow a student to take classes at his high school while earning credits both for high school and at the college. SLU's 1818 program is nationally known with a long, respected history, and given SLU is a Jesuit institution, the 1818 program was a natural fit for MUHS. This year we are able to offer 14 courses in which students have the opportunity to enroll for dual credit: AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science A, AP English Language, AP European History, AP Spanish Language, AP Spanish Literature, Geology, Literature of Great Britain, Faith & Reason, Honors Latin 4 & 5, Honors Spanish 4, Multivariable Calculus, and Plays: Shakespeare.
Junior and senior students need to have a 3.0 GPA to be eligible. Registration must be completed by Sept. 17. Students received this information and instructions in an email from Ms. Fran Maloney, assistant principal, last week. There will be a virtual informational meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13. Here you will learn about the program, how your son can register should he decide to do so, and other important information regarding both the AP tests and the dual credit option. The meeting will be recorded for those who are unable to attend.
