| Dear Parents and Guardians, Our hearts are heavy with the recent tragic loss of life in Waukesha and Oxford, MI. We remain in solidarity with the Waukesha community as it continues to heal from the tragedy of the Christmas parade. | | | We encourage all members of the Marquette High community to support #jerseys4jackson and tomorrow we welcome all students to wear a baseball jersey or other sports attire in the memory of Jackson Sparks and other victims impacted by this senseless act of violence. As we enter this month of December we are mindful of the busyness of the season. Students have two weeks of classes before the final exams. They are completing final papers, projects, and preparing for assessments. They are also involved in the start of winter athletics and co-curriculars. In the midst of their busyness, we invite students to not miss the season of Advent - a time of peace, hope, and joy. During the season, the MUHS community will consider how we may become the light of God's love in our world. Students are invited to participate in service projects, demonstrate compassion to others, and pray for peace in our society. Last week our school responded generously to the holiday toy drive in partnership with the House of Peace. Students donated over $3,000 to this project during a collection at the Thanksgiving all-school Mass. They have the opportunity to donate toys and gift cards in the next two weeks to assist families in need. May you and your family have a peaceful Advent season. AMDG, Jeff Monday Principal | | | All-school Holiday Toy Drive Continues through Dec. 10 Congratulations and thank you, MUHS, for successfully kicking off our annual Holiday Drive at our Thanksgiving Mass on Tuesday, Nov. 23, with a monetary collection of over $3,000 which we will use to purchase personal hygiene items and household essentials. Now, we focus on the Toy and Gift Card Drive. Toys, for children ages 10 and younger, can be dropped off at MUHS between Monday, Nov. 29, and Friday, Dec. 10 (8 a.m.) or ordered online with delivery to the House of Peace (Christmas Toy Drive). Collection bins will be available in the Henke lobby and 2nd floor atrium. Please drop off gift cards (preferably $20 for Walmart or Target) and cash donations in the Main Office. We are also accepting Venmo (Venmo profile) donations for the purchase of toys and gift cards; please have Venmo and cash donations in by Wednesday, Dec. 8, so we have time to shop. Key Club members will be visiting homerooms between Dec. 1 and 9 to encourage participation and answer questions. If you have any questions, email Key Club Advisor Mrs. Annette Cleary at clearya@muhs.edu. | MUHS Movie Night Dec. 3 - Roe v. For students who would like to get a head start on their audition, the spring musical webpage contains the songs and scenes to choose from, as well as a video of the dance routine. All who wish to audition will be required to perform (1) the dance, (2) one song, and (3) one scene. Though it is not imperative that students have any of these items prepared in advance (the dance and all songs will be taught at the auditions), it will certainly be to their benefit to look them over before auditions. - Students should not wear tap shoes for the audition. It is requested that they wear hard sole shoes - wearing sneakers or any other shoes that might have a strong grip will not be ideal for this audition.

Flyer - Board Plans Spring 2022 | Sleep Wellness and Tips for Achieving It As we approach the holiday season, we understand how disruptive the "hustle and bustle" can become to student and family's overall wellbeing. Often we try to squeeze so many activities in that we forgo our regular sleep routines to fit everything in. There are a number of reasons why Advocate Aurora Student and Family Assistance Program (AAH SFAP) encourages you to continue prioritizing your sleep wellness during this holiday season: - Sleep is critical to health: Research has shown that good sleep is as important as what you eat and how much you exercise. It has both short and longer positive impacts on your overall health.
- Lack of sleep impairs everything: When you are over-tired, your decision-making abilities, reaction time, memory, ability to communicate, and capacity for learning are all compromised, as much as 50%.
- Chronic sleep deprivation increases chronic disease: Consistently getting less than seven hours of sleep per night increases diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and obesity.
- Being overtired impacts your appetite: Sleep deprivation is also associated with increased cravings for foods high in fat and consuming up to 500 more calories per day than those who are well rested.
- There are big benefits to being well rested: Getting enough sleep boosts our creativity, helps us manage our moods, balance our metabolism, and boost our immune systems to avoid those winter colds.
The attached flyer provides further information on sleep wellness and tips for achieving it. A student can still be working on his application and does not need to have submitted his application(s) before meeting with Ms. Sahagún. Ms. Sahagún will be submitting credentials for all early January college application deadlines prior to final exams week in order for materials to arrive by deadlines. No appointment is needed for seniors to see Ms. Sahagún. Seniors are also receiving this message in daily announcements, the Student Bulletin and direct emails from College Counseling. Please note, MUHS College Counseling is closed over the Christmas Break (Dec. 23 - Jan. 3).
- College Financial Aid Application Process Reminder: If not yet completed, we strongly encourage our senior families to file the 2022-23 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the form all colleges use for need-based financial aid review, by early January 2022. Please consult your son's colleges' financial aid websites – always the best source of information for each college – for their own unique priority financial aid filing date and to determine if any additional financial aid forms are required. In addition to the FAFSA, some colleges also require the CSS Profile as well as other tax documents. Completing the required forms/documentation by early January will provide your family with the best opportunity to receive timely financial aid notifications from the colleges to which your son is admitted and help you make an informed decision on a best fit college choice – which includes financial fit.
- Share Admission Decidion News: As your senior begins to receive admission decisions from his applied-to colleges, please encourage him to stop in and share his news with the College Counseling team. Despite what you might think, our team only knows about his college's decision by him telling us. We want to celebrate his good news or offer our advice on next steps if he receives a request for additional information or a waitlist or deferral decision. Thank you for your support.
- Weekly Scholarship Shout-out in Student Bulletin: Just a reminder that the weekly Student Bulletin includes a section for seniors with a Scholarship Shout-Out list of scholarship opportunities to explore. A student's first step in any scholarship process is to see Ms. Sahagún in College Counseling BEFORE he starts an application. Ms. Sahagún can help with recommendation letters (if required) and other pertinent details to assist him with completing the application.
For Junior Parents - Did you miss the Junior College Information Night on Wednesday, Nov. 10? Thank you to so many of our Class of 2023 families who attended our information night last week. It was great to have you with us in person to begin the college search conversation. If you missed the program, please have your junior stop in the College Counseling Center, Room 119, to pick up the Junior College Night information program folder that was distributed that evening. The folder includes a number of college search handouts including an easy-to-follow action steps handout that walks students/parents through very reasonable, doable actions you can take from this winter through summer to keep you on track with the college process. Nothing overwhelming we promise. Mrs. Cleary and Mrs. Bennett will begin individual meetings with juniors starting in late January running through the spring.
