PARENT NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The care, health, and safety of your son is always our top priority. Tragically, too often our attention is drawn to incidents of violence in our nation's schools. This week we held school safety sessions for all the students. Mr. Casey Kowalewski, Dean of Students, presented to students to prepare them to respond to any type of emergency situation.

Our school is fortunate to have a team of former law enforcement officers who serve as members of our security team under the direction of Mr. Mike Dubis, former MPD Captain. Further, Mr. Phil Horter, MUHS Student Supervisor, is also a retired police officer and an expert on school safety and teaches courses on this topic to school administrators across our state. The expertise of the entire team is utilized in taking a preventative approach to security incidents on campus.

An important component of our approach to safety is the sacredness of the teacher-student relationship. Cura personalis is a central tenant to Jesuit education that animates the MUHS approach. The faculty are committed to caring for all aspects of our students' lives - physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. Students are shown that they can always turn to their counselors, advisors, teachers, and administrators for guidance. They also learn the responsibility they have for showing compassion and concern for one another, particularly during times of distress or struggle.

Another key element in any effective safety plan are committed students who report issues of concern to school personnel. In this week's presentation, Mr. Kowalewski called on the students to "SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING." This applies to students reporting concerning posts on social media or suspicious activity that may be observed on or away from campus. Here are the presentation slides and relevant information to discuss with your son in the coming days.

We will always do our best to communicate in a timely manner with our parents in matters of school safety and climate. In assisting with our communication efforts, please let us know if you have any changes of email addresses, mobile phone numbers, or emergency contact information.

Let us pray for victims of violence in our nation's schools and in our world.

AMDG,

Mr. Jeff Monday

Principal
