PARENT NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Many of our seniors will exercise their right and obligation to vote for the first time during next week's midterm elections. In the midst of the political divisions and ideological differences in society, MUHS promotes active engagement of all students in the democratic process and civic life. A Jesuit education helps students confront and navigate difficult topics while teaching them to think critically about the world and their roles in it. These times present prime opportunities for us to model civil discourse and help our students address the issues that advance the fundamental principles of our country and the core tenants of our faith.

As a school that forms "men for others," civil discourse should draw students outside of themselves to understand the "other." This requires that we engage in authentic and respectful dialogue with those who hold different views while remaining steadfast to our beliefs and the Gospel values. During the semester MUHS students have encountered good-faith discussions with classmates where civil discourse and openness to new ideas are embraced.

St. Ignatius provided guideposts to his companions to communicate well in the face of adversity and differing views. These Ignatian tips are posted in MUHS classrooms and serve to guide purposeful dialogue among the students:

  • Assume the best in others.
  • Create environments of "greater love than fear."
  • Be humble.
  • Be respectful.
  • Be good listeners.
  • Tread lightly.
  • Don't go it alone.

Next Wednesday we will practice these principles during the "Topper Talk" as students come together to process election results with the aim of building a more united and compassionate community and nation.

Let us pray for our students that they may use their Jesuit education to think critically and work for the common good in society. We also pray for elected officials that they may lead with courage and conviction during these divided and challenging times.

AMDG,

Mr. Jeff Monday

Principal

SENIOR PARENTS

  • After College Admission Application Submission – It's Cura Application Time: Now that many seniors have and will continue to submit admission applications to colleges, please encourage your senior to watch for emails to arrive from his applied-to colleges on how to create an Applicant Status Portal. This portal provides a window into his application at each college and a checklist of completed required application materials. The portal may also outline any next action steps needed. Cura Application - continue to care for your application after its submitted! Here are a few tips from recent MUHS grads on college applicant portals:

    • Keep a log of the website and your username/password for each of your college portals.

    • Monitor your portals regularly. This is the main method colleges will communicate with students to share missing items, next step actions as well as admission decisions. Colleges hold students responsible for checking the portal and completing necessary steps.

    • Confused with what the portal is sharing? Encourage your senior to bring in his laptop to College Counseling to share his portal and we can help him decipher.

  • College Financial Aid Tip Of The Week: UW HELP, the trusted advising group for the UW System, is hosting a Budgeting & Financial Aid with UW Campuses Webinar featuring special guest speakers from UW-Milwaukee and UW-Parkside. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how budgeting can help students manage finances during college, the financial aid process, how to compare financial aid offers, how those funds are disbursed, and more. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m.  Register Here
